Soccer
in the Dark
is a story about the Mexico City Aztecas. The blind soccer team that represents Mexico City in the national league.
The game is played with a specialized ball that makes sound as it moves through the pitch.
Players shout
¡Voy!
¡Voy!
¡Voy!
Until they’re ready to shoot.
Reynaldo Rivera, the team’s star,
during a game against Puebla.
The team players have varying degrees of visual impairment.
For this reason,
some of them have their eyes
covered during the games so
there are no unfair advantages.
Mexico City is one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas, covering 573 square miles.
Public infraestructure designed
for the visually impaired is
widely insufficient
in Mexico.
But still, the Aztecas make it to the field.
They have found a clearer path
in the pitch,
than in the streets.
